As residents of Southern California, we are well aware that wildfires have become a year-round threat. Since the most recent wildfires in Southern California, everyone is wondering how they can prepare for such a catastrophic event. Keep in mind that wildfire is a dangerous and unpredictable problem and there is no absolute way to protect a home in every situation. However, what we can do as homeowners or renters is take advantage of every opportunity available to be as prepared as possible in case of an emergency of any kind.
Protect Your Home
The most important way to defend your property against the spread of a wildfire is to create a defensible space. Always remember the three R’s of defensible space; Removal, Reduction and Replacement. Removal. Eliminate entire plants, trees and shrubs. California state laws requires the 100 feet distance. Secondly, reduction. Trim away excess branches or dead leaves and mow dead grass in the 100 feet radius area. Finally, replacement. Substitute more hazardous vegetation with fire resistant types.
Prepare & make a plan
Best of all is the peace of mind that comes from planning for wildfire, preparing your family, home, belongings and surroundings. Long before the threat of a fire, plan your evacuation. Make a list of all the most important items you want to take with you. Make a video inventory of all of your valuable items. Contact your insurance agent and review your insurance coverage to make sure you’re adequately covered to replace your home and personal belongings inside. Get together with family members and discuss evacuation routes and where to meet if not everyone is home at the time.
Remember, preparation and having a plan in effect before the smoke is in the air can make all the difference.
